Anyone ever have Kidney stones?
#1
Good morning everyone. Saw this on a Michigan State sports board I'm a member of. It had a lot of good responses some funny, some absolutely cringe worthy. I'll start.
Back when I was 10 years old I had an episode one night. I woke up about midnight with the worst pain I had experienced in my young life. I've never been stabbed before but imagine the pain I was feeling was as close as anything I could think of. The pain was so severe I could not move from the fetal position on the floor. I remember my mother laying there crying along side of me. I got up once to go to the bathroom and immediately vomited from the pain. I made it to the bathroom and passed something I can only describe as a large piece of my insides. It was roughly the size of a small pea and was covered in tissue. We went to the ER and later the doctor. After a battery of tests and ultrasounds it was discovered that my Ureter tube (connects kidney to bladder) was 6 times the size it was supposed to be. Surgery was the only option given by the doctors here in MI. My parents decided that they wanted a second opinion and other family members had gone to Mayo Clinic in MN, so off we went. My first day there they tested how my urinary track was working. They did this by giving me a catheter and injecting me with radioactive dye. For those of you lucky enough to never experience a catheter google it. See what comes up. Well after a week there it was decided that I did not need the surgery but I would have to go back every year to test my urinary track. So for every year from age 10 to 17 I went to have the same tests done. My doctor I had while at Mayo Clinic was the top Pediatric Urologist in the country and would routinely take my medical records to conferences all over the world. Apparently I am special since no other doctors in the world had ever experienced a situation like mine.
To be continued...

So when I was 19 I had a drug test for a job. During the test the discovered blood in my urine. Back to the doctor I go. After a few ultrasounds and other tests it was discovered I had kidney stones. I had no idea since I experienced no pain with the stones. Back to Mayo I go. Another test of my urinary track shows that my urine in pooling where my ureter tube is overlapping my bladder. Surgery was the only option. They went UP through my urinary track with what they explained was a "coat hanger apparatus". After the surgery I would have a stint placed between my bladder and kidney so the valves wouldn't swell shut. This was the worst pain I had ever experienced. Every time I went to the bathroom urine would shoot back into the kidney making it feel like Mike Tyson was giving me kidney shots. This went on for three days. On the third day the doctor told me to remove the stint. I asked how I should go about it. He said grab the string (that was hanging outside my body, coming out...well I'll leave that to you to figure out) and pull quickly. I tried this once. The pain brought me to my knees in the hotel bathroom. I pulled myself back up and tried again. Once again I fell down hitting my head on the counter. I lay there thinking of what to do. I noticed that when I hit my head I did not notice the extreme pain in my nether regions. So I stand up and begin slamming my head into the door every time I pull. This works for about 45 seconds and 5 pulls. The stint was still in, however I could see the stint just starting to come out. I remembered when I was kid and my grandfather used to tie a string around my loose tooth and tie the other end to a door. I decided this was what I was going to do. I got the string tied to the door and after a minute of mentally preparing for the pain I slammed it shut. I fell back slumped to the floor. I looked down and was bleeding pretty bad. From inside. I walked back to bed and the pain got so bad I vomited. It felt like a horse had kicked me square in the balls. I took 4 vikodin and passed out for about 12 hours. When I woke up I saw the scene in the bathroom. It looked like a murder scene. I was expecting the cops to show up after the commotion from earlier. That coupled with the blood would lead to an awkward conversation with the police I assumed. Well after 1 more day of vikodin and sleep I headed back home to Michigan. It was 3 weeks before I could pee with our pain or blood. This was by far the worst pain I've ever experienced. I tell you this because today is the 18th anniversary since the original incident. So lets hear your stories. Interested to see how many guys here have ever gone through something like this.
