canal in niland/calipatria
#1
stayed at my grandfathers mobile home up in sky valley/desert hot springs thursday. fished for catfish at the pond that was there and caught quite a few decent cats one maybe up to 5lbs. catfishing there requires absolutely no skill and is super fun on trout setups. woke up the next morning about 5 and made the 1.5hr long drive down the 111 into niland/calipatria. hung a left on mcdonald and fished the canal at the dam. caught a ton of lmb all of which were 8 inches or under.. we were throwing jerkbaits as we fished a 2 mile stretch of the canal and it was the same story. water at this area was not totally clear but clear enough to have been able to see if there were bigger fish in the area. we just werent feeling it. we continued up the canal and just like oatums said "drive until you see the fish," that is what we did. water was clear and shallow and we saw a school of 8-10 stripers in the 8-15lb range. they were spooked wayyyy too easily. walked upstream to sneak up on other stripers but could not get them to bite anything and tried throwing just about everything. called it a day at about three and hung our heads down low. but i will definately be back out there sometime soon maybe at night. anyways thanks to oatums for putting us on the fish in an area we have never been in.

Good deal, I'm glad my info was useful to you. That canal had lots to offer. Just have to put in the time. Those fat striper get me every time, you see em then second later they're gone. Keep at it and you will get that toad soon.

Thanks for the report, looking foword to see more from ya.

still sounded like a fun time, those little bass are fun to catch. i would like to try fly fishing those stripers, kinda like bone fishing style in the flats.

by the "dam" do you mean the outlets for the smaller canals or the bigger dams on the main canal? and yeah i think next time i head out there i will definately have live bait for those dang stripers. and have you ever fished the concrete aqueduct off of dillon near the 10?

You have much better chance getting nice fish from main canal. I caught nice fish to 20lb from the little canal branching off the main canal though, never know what you gonna pull out of there. The canal I gave you direction to in IV is call Highline Canal...........As far as the concrete canal "Coachella Canal" near I-10. I becareful out there, you can get ticket for trespassing. I did catch some nice fish from that section of the canal, but it slow pick compare to IV.

Here some fish I caught in that section of canal.
