Impressive yes, especially very, these are the words that sum up Western Outdoor News, 10th annual TroutfesT on Big Bear Lake that hosted 580 anglers over two days Saturday and today, Sunday. With stringer weights in the four divisions ranging from a hefty two-day total of 17.30 pounds for adult male to 9.45 for junior female, there was a lot of action at the final weigh-in today under sunny skies.
Big Trout and a fishing trip courtesy of RW’s to Alaska went to Don Sicka from Pasadena and the first day leader. Don brought to net his 7.75-pound prize-winning trophy Big Bear Bow off of Papoose Bay on Saturday while soaking a nightcrawler.
Luigi Moreno, from South El Monte took the top adult male honors with five fish good for 9.38 pounds on Saturday then backing it up with another limit on Sunday of 7.92 pounds for an outstanding total weight of 17.30 pounds. Mixed in with the double limits was a nice 3.93-pound trout. Luigi worked the lake near the observatory using a variety of techniques including, bait fishing with PowerBait, nightcrawlers and occasionally trolling a Kast Master, which got him the big one and put him over the top.
One of the best aspects of Troutfest, is that you don’t have to catch a lot of trout or the big one, like Don and Luigi. All you have to do is enter to Win Big at TroutfesT. Example in point; the Sea Eagle “Mean Green Fishing Machine” inflatable pontoon courtesy of Panther Martin went to one lucky angler how hasn’t been able to win any other way, Brian Hoekstra , Indio who after five years of participating, exclaimed, “I love it…I finally won!”
The excitement built as all 580 TroutfesT anglers waited in silence as The Grand Prize Winner of a Klamath 16 EWX with trailer and a 40 hp Mercury four stroke motor, sponsored by Quality Performance Marine, was revealed. As Billy Egan, tournament director, read the winning number; a large cheer erupted from the crowd as Donna May from Landers, yelled to the top of her lungs that she was the lucky winner. Donna and her partner of 18 years, James Binns just simply couldn’t believe how lucky they were. Donna could barely compose herself as her friends yelled, “Get in your boat!” All she could say once she settled down was. “We been catchin’ some yummy fish and I got a boat to boot.”
Even though it may be an overused cliché, the truth is that at Troutfest, “It doesn’t get any better than this!”

DON SICKA of Pasadena caught the biggest fish, a 7.75 pounder the first day, and thereby won a fishing trip courtesy of RW’s to Alaska he was fishing at Papoose Bay on Saturday while soaking a nightcrawler.
TEAM McSTUD got into the fun Saturday, dressing the part and doing pretty well in the fishing department, too.
