Support your local business?
#1
I have a interesting question. We always hear the same crap about support your local businesses. I'm all for it completely but we have the sob gov taken more money from us. So cheaper is the way we think to keep more green in the pockets. I don't know about you but my pockets seem to have holes in them. I see to may people selling baits from Do-it Molds. Do we buy from them and go about are day on the cheap end of the deal? Or support guys like warbaits and reebs lures? More expensive but they are a true company in a curl world. They are true to our San Diego / Southern California fisheries and support our industry. It's a toss up completely.

Well that is a great question, coming from both sides of the fence on this one. here is my take on it. if you can make a product here, it can be made overseas, Right. now the cost of product X is just say $.50 overseas, sweet price. Cost of same product X here is $0.95 wow a $0.45 savings. sounds great, well people do not realize is this little list: Shipping from overseas, Min. Order overseas, Import tax and Duties. So you add all that up and now your great overseas price plus the same overhead here cost its about the same or sometimes cheaper here at home to produce.
now the other side of the guy selling on the side, making out of his or hers side business/garage, question is do they do it legit.
To get started you may cheat here and there, it happens. now your making a killing on your product. its going to get noticed one way or another.
the mom & pop shops are being forced out by 2 things big companies/internet and the government.
now whos really cheating who here. small shops are struggling but we cant afford the increase in prices, the govt. wants more. so its truly up to you the buyer. do you pay tax and extra, or do you save the money and have memories of the good old days of going to the little shops.

It truly is a personal call, and it sucks. I know that i dont have the extra cash to go out to other shops like i used too. i barter more than ever now.

Bottom line is a quality vs. price game, not cheaper crap. But how can i save money!

And obviously you dont know warbaits if your saying that. i cant speak for reebs but i know for a fact that warbaits are all made in fucking mexico! They're doing the same thing your talking about. Trying to save a buck to maximize their profits. if you want to get into specifics about the financial side of things for those bigger lead companies, by all means i'll engage you 1. I sell tons of lead products, and use a few of the do-it molds. This wonderful govt of ours that is stripping all the $$$ out of our pockets, is forcing us to try new things and work our asses off to stay afloat and get ahead. If we want to continue to try and have fun and enjoy our sport, can we really afford a $7 lead head that you'll lose in approximately 15 minutes when you fish any structure or kelp? Just to help someone that we think "is a real company in a cruel world?" Especially when we know 75% of everything this country has comes from out of the country? Your living in a fantasy world.

Aw, it looks like I may have upset a few people here. That was not my intentions in anyway. I do know both companies very well. The comment of people making them outside the US may be very true. If we want to talk like that, then why support the rod and reel manufactures? They do the same. As for the question, warbaits have spent the time and money to develop a product that is his own. He is a true company. The fact that its done outside the US is beside the point. 97% of the fishing companies are all outside the us. So again, do we take away business from someone that has become legit? I'm in the same boat, I can't afford all products and I have taken the cheap route.

No not upset at all. Ive heard a lot of talk about this outside of this forum so it just strikes a chord with me. your right about his marketing. i cant argue that at all. good product, stupid amount of money...lol. But as for supporting legit businesses, whats the point if it is all done outside of the U.S? All we are doing is supporting the business owners pockets, and the chinese/mexican manufacturers. Now if your talking about guys like Dolphin Tackle and Leadmasters, the two biggest lead producers in california, then absolutely. They are putting up with the stringent EPA and AQMD regulations in order to pour and manufacture here in California, the country's worst state to conduct business in.
