In UT/AZ at Lake Powell we have real good striper fishing. We have some trophy size stuff. What we do have is no limit fishing. You can take all you need or just C/R 100 fish a rod ain't uncommon.........Here is a report from last week. We(my son and I) had to catch some fish for the local high school cooking class...........
OK......made it to the launch ramp at about 7am.........got launched. Everything seems ok .........cold......oh turn on the meter...........DAM it's cold water to.......
Run to the cut looks a little shallow......it is.......about a foot once you get in and dodge the rocks.......Trolling motor and slow through.......Looks my last launch a Wawheap for awhile.Run back aways into Warm Creek and look around. First few drops go OK....then I realize the reel won't turn.......OK just iced line in the guides a couple of jerks on the line and all is good. For a bit....hard to bust solid ice out of the guides.......until the first reel froze up tight. OK we switched to spinners while the baitcasters defrosted in my pocket.
Metering fish not biting in 70' of water.....hhhhhmmmm look like good fish....lets change up the gear. I fished a p-line spoon and the boy rigged up one of Ken's stand up feathers dropshot style.
The boy gets one pretty quick......not big but it's cold.
Alright a start.....moved of a little deeper 80' and fished a few different spots for about an 1 1/2 we had 15 fish......10 were the 22-24" stuff all healthy no skinnies. We drove around our area for a good 45 mins........nothing to drop on.........Decided to go out of the canyon some more.......water was still freezing at Noon......48 and change was the warmest we saw all day.
Got into an area I love to fish deep.........yep there a good mark at 70' in 89' of water........
We are both bit........
We started catching fish real good.......and it wanted to stay with the boat. If you could get through the smaller fish up top......and get down the bigger fish were under them.
All the fish we caught looked like blown rock-cod.
Got a pic of graph in the middle of it........
We kept drifting deeper and more bigger fish!!!!
Kens feather were even good for "rop'in em.......
OK tally one fish 26", 3 solid 25" fish, 21 fish in the 22"-24" size and 23 yearling size guys.....Total of 48.
Left side
Right side
Ok started cutting fish.....found all of the bigger fish and some of the smaller fish had eggs or sperm sacks????????? Seems not like a January thing???
Cut a larger fish and found a BIG gizzard shad in it's gut.........tip of nose to tip of tail 8".
Makes me think a 22"-24" fish eats a shad that big..........hhhhhhhmmmmmm..............Got some ideas.
Well thats it. Overall pretty good fishing if you can get past the cold.
IMO a report stink without some pic's to go along with it.........the 12 image limit seems to limit a good report...............If there is an interest I can do some reports here to......
