Fish Report for Thursday, October 11th:
Offshore: Yes, a few guys got out today. Below the 1010 and outside the 220′s the yft’s and a few bluefin are biting today. The seas are fishable but expected to turn nasty this afternoon/evening. Only time will tell if this is the big hoot that ends it all. Inside on the 302 the yellows are on the kelps, but they are the small variety.
Catalina: I fished here yesterday and found plenty of calico bass and sheepshead. Never saw or hooked anything other than that. One guy on our boat saw a single yellow off the East quarry, about 12lbs. Squid at Eagle Reef, Parsons, Iron Bound, Little Harbor and off China.
Local: There is squid out front at Sand Bass Junction in 100′ of water. Saw 18 light boats and several seiners there last night. We made bait there the night before, no problem. The threshers are biting out front of Seal Beach and Surfside on the bait balls. They are down deep, so get your baits down.
Halibut continue to bite inside LB harbor. Find the bait and fish hard bottom. Drifts near rock jetties (are there any other kind?) and in the openings of the breakwall are good. I like live smelt for bait, but sardines will work just fine.
LOBSTERS: These babies love to crawl after the rain. Why? Who knows, they just do. With the explosion in popularity with hoop netting the area inside LB Harbor is ridiculously crowded and drama is common. Get away from the crowd and find areas by yourself for better results (and way more fun). Try the Izors or Sunset Wreck. Off HB the LCI and Barge Rock are prime lobster spots. No doubt with lobster traps right on the numbers. Market lobsters are not the huge ones, so commercial traps have openings that won’t allow the super big bugs in. If its big bugs you want, don’t be afraid to hoop near commercial pots. Catalina is loaded with shorts, but deeper spots have a better ratio of legals to shorts. The seals can be a real problem at Cat, so make sure you have good bait cages. Remember to always light your buoys and stay near them at all times. Short soaks are what works, so try 15-30 minutes max. Good luck!
