The week of Aug. 23-30, 2014
The Environment:
We’re finding warmer water, from 90- to 92-degrees in areas. The temps are actually cooler than July, in the high-90s. Skies are clear, blue and picture-postcard perfect with afternoon breezes.
The Bottom Line:
Flat calm seas and basically a mirror image of last week. The overly warm water has dulled fishing a little. As one experienced skipper put it, “Not great fishing; this over-90 degree water does not help!”
Let’s call it an honest 7 on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.
Billfish – The billfishing has improved with lots of sails and quite a few more striped marlin being released. The occasional blue has been showing as well. Look for them from La Ribera to the Lighthouse, 4 to 12 miles offshore.

Yellowfin Tuna – The yellowfin bit consistently all week. Conveniently, the mass of fish has remained in the same area for the past month. The fish are a little smaller, with an average of around 20-pounds. This bunch of tuna has been pretty much taking sardina only, either dead or alive. Fish will be found just off Los Frailes, about 1-1/2 miles off the beach.

Dorado – There’s no real concentration. Schooling dorado are spread all over East Cape. These are primarily smaller fish from 5- to 15-pounders.

The bottom fishing has picked up. Big pargo and amberjack are being taken off Punta Colorado and in front of actor Scott Glenn’s house. The bank off La Ribera has been very productive as well.
