Dear Mr. Newman:
Thank you for contacting me to share your opposition to assault weapons legislation. I respect your opinion on this important issue and welcome the opportunity to provide my point of view.
Mass shootings are a serious problem in our country, and I have watched this problem get worse and worse over the 40 years I have been in public life. From the 1966 shooting rampage at the University of Texas that killed 14 people and wounded 32 others, to the Newtown massacre that killed 20 children and 6 school teachers and faculty, I have seen more and more of these killings. I have had families tell me that they no longer feel safe in a mall, in a movie theater, in their business, and in other public places, because these deadly weapons are so readily available. These assault weapons too often fall into the hands of grievance killers, juveniles, gangs, and the deranged.
I recognize that the Second Amendment provides an individual right to bear arms, but I do not believe that right is unlimited or that it precludes taking action to prevent mass shootings. Indeed, in the same Supreme Court decision that recognized the individual right to bear arms, District of Columbia v. Heller, the Court also held that this right, like other constitutional rights, is not unlimited. That is why assault weapons bans have consistently been upheld in the courts, both before and after the Heller decision. I believe regulation of these weapons is appropriate.
Once again, thank you for your letter. Although we may disagree, I appreciate hearing from you and will be mindful of your thoughts as the debate on this issue continues. I to have seen this problem getting worse over time and agree that there is a problem.
In my opinion, the main problem from 1966 to present time is the use of prescription medication. My research has led me to believe that every person responsible for a mass shooting has been on some type of prescribed medication.You see, instead of dealing with people in a positive way, our culture has been driven to medicate (drug) people instead of helping or dealing with them which I feel is the “lazy way” of handling people and their problems in our society.
I am thankful that my parents did not allow me to be prescribed medication in 1975 because I was an active child who needed to burn off a lot of energy on a daily basis. Today I am a successful person in our society whom helps lead over 200 employees in the manufacturing industry here in southern California. This most likely would not have been the case if I had been takingthe medication suggested by my doctor in 1975, as history has shown.
I urge you to dig deeper into these mass shootings and the root causes behind them. Targeting assault weapons as you call them, or anything that can be used as a tool to take lives will only serve as a band aid to the deeper problems that should be addressed within our culture.
One last thought of mine; When Osama Bin Laden was assassinated, was it by an assault weapon or American Forces? I have never heard the media refer to an assault rifle being responsible for his death even though an assault rifle was the tool used.
