A tropical system currently down south of Baja, California is developing. This should become a Hurricane over the lifetime, weakening before hitting Southern California, and slamming the region with strong tropical moisture and upper dynamics.
94E is developing South of Baja. This storm should continue to develop and become a Hurricane before reaching Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The storm looks to be a north-northwest mover, which puts it right through Baja, California. This happens rarely, maybe once every five to ten years or so. A storm such as this will use the warm waters of the Gulf of California to maintain intensity.
At the current time, projections here at the Southern California Weather Authority indicate the storm will bring deep moisture and strong upper level dynamics to Southern California. The exact track of the center of the mid/upper level low associated with the system will determine who gets what. A track bringing it west of Baja, California will favor the metro zones getting storms when it hits, a track up the Gulf of California would favor the Deserts of Palm Springs, Imperial, Morongo Basin, Blythe, and Needles.
Track is everything with such a system and until this next Hurricane forms, tracking will be virtually impossible to calculate. Still, this article will serve as the forecast that a dying Hurricane will impact Southern California after Friday and into the Weekend and that I am watching the track closely to make adjustments and upgrade alerts if needed.
To put this to rest, a Hurricane is not going to hit Southern California. this will be below tropical storm status when the center arrives … due to the colder waters.
If you are planning to leave on a cruise this weekend, check with your cruise line or your travel agent to make sure that changes haven’t been made to your itinerary.
