Ok so if you put a little time in trolling for these guys you can get a chance at them.
3 to 5 lure pattern would be my suggestion to anyone really wanting one!
Marauders, Rapalas and Skirted marlin jigs.
Colors on the Marauders really doesnt matter
Rapalas black and purple
marlin skirts Black and any color
Just my thoughts and what i would troll, the next 2 trips i have we will be trolling those i promise this.
as for the location anywhere from la jolla to the 14 mile bank and out past the 4 mile mark. to the islands this fish feed and move alot.

ps. this deal of a fish of a life time, well maybe for California, if you really want one travel. Hawaii Florida Mexico they are caught daily. Just saying
