Seabed mining (email we received)
#1
So does anyone really know about this? Seabead mining in California waters? I really haven't looked into this, 1. The surfrider foundation out of Nevada?  2. My gut says follow the money so its probably true for hard minerals.

Here is the email:
Hi Captain Michael,

My name is Laura Walsh and I am helping spread the word to business leaders like you about AB 1832 – the California Seabed Mining Prevention Act. I’m also sending along a sign-on letter that allows you to add your support for protecting CA waters from harmful seabed mining.

Businesses that rely on a healthy coast and ocean do not need another threat. Yet here we are: seabed mining is a growing global extractive industry that could reach California waters despite calls around the world from industry, scientists, and the public for a moratorium.

The State of Washington passed a ban on seabed mining in state waters last year in 2021 and businesses in commercial and recreational fishing, and tourism led the call. Oregon has had a ban on seabed mining in its state waters since 1991.

California must safeguard its multi-billion-dollar fishing and tourism industries. Seabed mining would potentially permanently damage the seafloor and create toxin-laced sediment plumes that threaten the highly productive mid-layer of the ocean as well as estuaries which serve as nurseries for commercially and recreationally important species.

Authored by Assemblymember Luz Rivas (coauthors: Asm Stone, Senators Allen and Limón), AB 1832 will prevent the State Lands Commission from authorizing leases for the mining of hard minerals in California state marine waters. More than 30 organizations based in California have already pledged their support for this piece of legislation and we’d love to have you join us. Your voice as a business leader is important.

Please take a moment to sign on to this letter by Monday the 14th. You can still sign on after this date but by the 14th will allow the most time for the State Legislature to consider your input.

You can also review the letter text posted below and simply reply here with a “Yes” and I will add you to the letter.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Laura Walsh

Letter to Assemblymember Rivas in support of AB 1832 to prevent seabed mining in CA:

Dear Assemblymember Rivas,

We the undersigned businesses write to express our support and appreciation for your leadership in authoring Assembly Bill 1832 to prevent seabed mining of hard minerals in California’s marine waters. Our marine environment supports tens of thousands of jobs, California's coastal economy and robust recreational tourism opportunities.

The ocean underpins California’s multi-billion dollar fishing and tourism industries. As the seabed mining industry grows, its activities pose a large-scale disruption to these important ecosystems and the businesses that depend on them. Seabed mining endangers commercially and recreationally important species like salmon, groundfish, halibut and Dungeness crab as well as the overall health of our ocean. It also threatens our coastal tourism and recreation industries estimated at $27 billion annually.

Seabed mining carries with it unacceptable risks to marine health and fisheries that point to the need for prevention and precaution. We must work toward supporting a healthy ocean so that it can continue to provide social, economic, environmental and cultural benefits to Californians now and in future generations. Seabed mining would damage the seafloor (perhaps forever) and create toxin-laced sediment plumes that threaten the highly productive mid-layer of the ocean as well as estuaries which serve as fishery nurseries.

The State of Washington passed a ban on seabed mining in state waters last year in 2021, following Oregon’s seabed mining ban in 1991. The undersigned organizations urge California to do the same given the importance of a healthy marine environment to our fisheries, coastal communities, and state economy.

Please do all you can to ensure passage of AB 1832 to protect our California coastal waters, and please call on us to assist.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

[The Undersigned]
