A big thank you to Captain Jeff Jones of captainonboard.org for putting up fish reports on his web page. Here is a fish report for the 5th and 6th of feb... Check captainonboard.org threw out the day for more information. Thanks Captain Jeff Jones...
Wednesday February 6th weather update:
The National Weather Service has amended it’s forecast and the only day that they are predicting rain now is Friday. Less wind with this front that previously reported. The weekend looks fair and fishable. A more comprehensive fish report and weather later this afternoon. ~Captain Jeff Jones
Fish Report for Tuesday, February 5th:
Weather alert (storm watch, 2013!!!) Just when things had been stable for long enough that we were just getting all the pieces of the puzzle together, someone is going to shake the box. Two storms heading our way will start tomorrow with #1, then Thursday with a stronger #2 and a big blow after it. Tragic.
Catalina: Lots of squid. From Avalon all the way around to China a guy could stop just about anywhere and have squid come to the lights in 90′ of water. There has been reports of bait all along the front at Hen Rock, Empire, The Isthmus and all the way West and around to Iron Bound. No doubt there is bait middle back too. Yellows and seabass were both seen and caught at both ends over the last week, but nothing even close to a bite worth running for. All this goes away tonight as storm #1 moves in.
Ensenada: STILL good YT fishing on the lee of Todos Santos Island. There is a big reef we call San Miguel Reef that is basically in front of the West End of Todos, and that is where the action has been. Yo-yo iron in blue/white or scrambled egg fished near the bottom on meter marks has been the ticket. Don’t leave meter marks to chase birds, as some are on bonito and barracuda, not yellows. Only time will tell if the weather screws this up.
La Jolla: To a much lesser decree there have been 18-30lb yellows caught here, but only in the early morning hours. Very scratchy fishing for even the best of anglers. These are big fish and few and far between. I say almost no chance these will be around when the weather clears.
Halibut: Even better halibut fishing today that it has been with fish to 28lbs caught near the LB Gap. Bounce Balling or drifting with sardine (smelt or brownbait is better) has had equal results. This area is famous for fishing good in stormy weather so don’t be afraid to don a rain coat and hammer this over the next few days. The halibut are already wet, they won’t care.
