Catalina, SBI and SCI Fish Reports
Fish Report for Saturday, July 28th:
Local Bluefin!? Well, if you live in Sand Diego there is! The SAC spotter plane was out today and planning on looking out west and local to help out the 3/4 day boats with kelps and possibly some tunas. I do not have numbers or know exactly where BUT, it’s not that hard to figure out. Coronados are essentially closed because nobody was prepared with MEXICOS last minute decision for every angler to have VISAs, and any captain with half a brain knew to stay at least 24mi outside the Gauntlet. I going to guess 302, since there were kelps holding and a few BFT’s for private guys earlier this morning. All the boats with local bluefin had Mex permits and were online to fish the Nado’s up until yesterdays debacle.
SBI: Seabass! Lots of squid and a few seabass today. A sportboat had a score out here yesterday. Small island and easy o find the conditions. Just west of Sutil on the back. Big pocket in the kelp with an inside and an outside. Just look for the birds sitting. On the front look at the edge of the MLPA line.
MARLIN: Quite a few yachts out looking today, and from the sound of things, they are seeing a few and having a few up in the jigs. No real biters that I heard of though. It is a great start. From the 267/279 and down towards La Jolla on a straight line. Pockets of life, with marlin. On the slacks, the fish popped, right on schedule.
Catalina: A great island for getting a mooring and heading into town right now. Really, I am tired of the same report everyday. Look at yesterdays report below. No doubt that there have been some yellows and seabass caught, but just not what it should be this time of year.
SCI: Best place to be right now, in my opinion. Yellows, big halibut and a chance at a seabass. The nice weather in the Cove and some squid to be caught. Drop the pick outside the Caves and you just might re-start the deep water bonanza that went all season last summer, and should repeat. Along the front it is business as usual. Yellows, calicos and halibut with hot weather and flat seas, at least early in the day.
LOCAL: Water temps dropped on the Flats and the squid got thick again. Now, one can either think “it’s over, time to get the kids ready for school” OR, “Wow! Another go around on the seabass, and then when the conditions stabilize we will get another pass at the migratory sand bass!” I’m for the latter. Cooler water means seabass, squid and maybe a thresher. Warm water means huge crowds catching turd rollers and slime sticks by the thousands. I pick cooler water, at least for a while anyways.
Channel Islands: Epic rockfishing and a few giant halibut, with the occasional seabass. So pretty much, back to normal.
ALBACORE:
Don’t forget that up around Santa Cruz the albies are biting, and not too far off the beach either. Beautiful country up there. Pack up the wife and kids and trailer the boat up the coast, camping along the way. I used to do this when I was a kid. My parents would set the boat up like a camping trailer. When you get to Santa Cruz, hand your wife a copy of your life insurance policy and make the run out to the albies and put out the jigs. I’ve spent some time up here, running yachts up and down the coast. It’s a different world up here. Be careful, SERIOUSLY.
