Shimano Trinidad dc pawl upgrade(anti-reverse upgrade)
#1
It’s no secret that one of the weak points on the gold Shimano Trinidad’s is the anti-reverse design. When they came out with the dc (digital chip) Trinidad they fixed this problem by spring loading the pawl so its in constant contact with the dawg. The dc Trinidad’s are going for near $1000 apiece if you can find them so here’s a breakdown of how to upgrade your gold Trinidad to a dc anti-reverse. This will also work on the torium line that had the same issue.
You can buy the parts on ereplacementparts.com that’s the only place I’ve found that carries them. Shimano no longer stocks parts for these reels.
The part numbers are tgt1304 for the spring and tgt1303 for the pawl. Cost me a total of $10 with shipping. [Image: d95b8d20e31b5ba46d0936246a3f2ce3.jpg]
The first thing your going to do is remove the handle nut, handle and star drag.

One important thing to be mindful of is there is a spring loaded pin underneath the drag star that may shoot out when you unscrew it. Be careful not to loose it.
Then you remove the pressure washers under the the drag star. I just pull them off all at once and keep them in the same order.
Now your ready to pull your side plate off. I recommend loosening all the screws and pulling them all off with the displays to make sure you keep them with there correct holes.
Once you get the side plate off your going to need to remove the drive gear along with the drag washer stack in order to get to the anti-reverse. This is what your going to be replacing. [Image: 4d1b307de154857a2142852b14a690ea.jpg] start by removing the two screws and keeper on top of the pawl and removing the old pawl and the dawg. Place the spring as shown in the picture.     then place the new pawl in and replace the keeper and screws and the dawg. To install the dawg with the new pawl you will have to pull the pawl all the way back and once you let go it will set right into the dawg grooves. [Image: b4af22ca2623f17e89162c5ae34e1e81.jpg]. Then all you have to do is put it back together. The only tricky part is replacing the spring loaded pin under the drag star. You have to push it in and hold it in place with a small screwdriver through the small hole in the top.     then you screw down your drag star and remove the screwdriver. The rest is just reversing the tear down. This is also a great time to service your reel if you need to.
If you have any questions feel free to ask me or refer to these shimano service videos on YouTube.

There you go. You now have a bulletproof Trinidad. The clicking is the new pawl doing its job. It’s the sound of confidence in your equipment.
