Catalina, SBI and SCI Fish Reports

Fish Report for Monday, October 8th: Just recently I posted on FaceBook that I thought it was going to be one of the last good offshore weekends of the year. You would not believe the amount of shit I took for that statement. Look now, the end is near. The wind is howling down the California coast and the current is ripping downhill. With more wind forecasted for the rest of the week, and even some rain on Thursday with a BIG WESTERLY BLOW to follow, all you nay sayers can eat some crow.

Offshore: The San Diego boats on the 1010 are crying the blues with wind and chop making things miserable. A few have connected with bluefin, but it looks like the break that held the yellowfin has moved south or vanished completely. Over the weekend the inner waters had some nice dorado and small yellowtail. You know they are small when nobody will send me a photo of one. Crazy small. The inner water areas are like the 182 and the 371. That is what I mean by inner waters.

Catalina: Pretty good calico bass fishing right now. I saw some good bass fishing inside Eagle Reef and others did well at Lions Head and the Isthmus Reefs. I thought the live squid was the ticket, but others caught fish on sardines. Some yellows up west at Johnsons and West Cove, but mostly just for the spearos. Squid almost anywhere you hang a light, but Little Harbor is the main area. Rumors about seabass and yellows at Little Harbor I think are bogus. Just my educated guess. I will not go into the details behind why I think the intel is bad, but history has shown this particular scenario to be the same, time and time again.

San Clemente Island: “Heroes welcome here” is the sign you see when you arrive at this island right now. Anchor up and catch a quick limit of 1-5lb yellowtail, and you are instantly a hero. Notice nobody is showing any photos of these fish? Duh! What a joke.

Local: Halibut inside the breakwater and threshers on the outside. Both are on bait balls, and both are eating sardines down deep. Darn good fishin’. Get on it!
