Fish Report for Wednesday, October 3rd:

Offshore: A bit of fog covered most of the coastline this morning, and I get the feeling it held a few guys back from heading offshore. The reports today were few and far between. Basically I heard early that there were no tuna on the 425 today, then heard it was good. The 1010 bit today, and above/below it. One guy I talked to said the sportboats were west of the 1010, then later I found out they were below the 1010. Either way, the tuna are still biting. The Hidden Bank and Upper Hidden both had guys catching fish on them. Somebody caught a marlin, and it sounded like it came from below the border.

Local: Seriously overlooked is the incredible halibut fishing right now. Inside the federal breakwater (LB Harbor) and in tight to the beach is kicking out some real quality fish. I met an old buddy at the kids football practice last night that said he’s be killing the big flatties, all inside the BW. The full moon is just past so there should be a grunion run right now, whether its in the tide books or legal to catch them is irrelevant. The halibut are stacked up along the beaches eating grunion, which look identical to smelt. Get the idea?

Catalina: Find the right set of conditions and this island will surprise you. Plenty of yellows and seabass around (trust me). Live squid is required. Don’t get lazy and buy a tank of sardines on me.

SCI: Same as yesterday. (hear monotone, down toned voice) Lots of yellowtail on the front, from Pyramid Head to Steve’s Point. Live squid, which you can catch in the Cove or buy from the Marie Claire at Catalina (Little Harbor ch11). (Back to regular voice) Be nice to Darryl on the Marie Claire, he is a super cool guy.

More Squid Intel: My buddy that lives down near San Diego calls me this morning and says “you should see all the light boats along the coast down here!” From Del Mar to La Jolla the commercial squid fleet is gathered together for some reason. Remember when I reported that they were all on the Horseshoe? Well, they didn’t catch bait for more than 4 day until it was all gone. WTF? How can they just keep killing all that squid without reaching some sort of quota? I’ll never understand the greed and mismanagement that goes on with our fishery, (and this country).
looking like its winding down a little
