Catalina, SBI and SCI Fish Reports

Fish Report for Tuesday, July 31st:

Catalina: Slow for most. This island is serving big slices of humble pie to all but luckiest of anglers. A few seabass down east, and around the middle of the back (and West Cove). Yellows around, but not biting. Fair calico fishing, at best.

SBI: Same as yesterday, add a few yellows. Squid area shrunk to just in front of the anchorage. Some big ass flatties coming from here.

SCI: Lots of squid in the Cove. A few yellows chasing it around at dawn. Not much in the way of seabass reports lately? Yellows up and down the front, if there is some current and you can get away from the sealions. A long ways to go for good bass fishing, but it IS pretty good.

LOCAL: The squid all but dried up all the sudden. Terrible sand bass fishing. The barracuda showed up somewhere for the sportboats, but I have no idea where (hows that for honesty). No problem, just look for them! I hate to recommend that someone follows the 1/2 day boat, as it goes against everything I’m about. Fact is these guys found the fish, and you can too.

DOWN SOUTH: Outside Ensenada there is some pretty good fishing. The inner banks (Banda, Finger) has kelps holding yellows and dorado. The “JUST” outside banks (Double 220′s, 238/295 and Lower 500) have kelps holding the above plus bluefin. Sportboats have the chum, and are putting the wood to the tunas today. Us private guys can pick away on the kelps, and get few more trolling with lighter leaders and diving type lures.

MARLIN: Seem to have taken a day off. (In other words, nobody was able to catch one). Harsh? Maybe. Doesn’t mean I could have caught one! They didn’t just leave or not eat today, so maybe they moved.
remember this Marlin go a day or two wide open then off and back and forth...
