Me, choodak, fisher, and a buddy of ours decided to take a shot at some of those channel island seabass this weekend since its been going off up there. Plan was to head up Friday night and depending on conditions when we got there either go out that night or sleep at the dock and launch early morning. We load up and and start heading up to Ventura. Some guy pulls next to is on the freeway and says we have a flat. Ah sh!t. Pull over look at it and its completely flat so we find an autozone nearby so we decide to try to get to it. Pull off the freeway and into a parking lot and start to jack up the trailer and a guy points out to us that we just happened to stop next to a tire shop. Why these guys were still open at 730pm is beyond me but they fixed it and back on the road we went. To late to launch when we get there so we sleep at the dock.
Wake up 4am, put the boat in the water and off to Cruz we went with pretty nice seas. Took about an hour or so to get to our spot and we start searching for squid since the bait reciever didn't have one. We start marking fish everywhere! Squid wasn't abundant but we were able to make enough to last the day. Around 8am my rod with a glow tady and a squid pinned on gets hammered, I am on! Everyone is trying to get there lines in since I am circling the boat. Fisher was handed a rod to hold so he couldn't bring his rod in and then he gets hammered! Fish On! I fight mine get it to color and its a damn bat ray. Fisher sees what I bring in and assumes he has one too so he pins his drag down and horses it in. He wasn't looking when the fish came to color, and it wasn't a bat ray, oh no it was the right kind! He nearly pulls the whole fish out of the water since he wasn't looking but it's still there. Choodak grabs the gaff and a swing and a miss! Second swing nails it and we bring on the first white seabass to be caught on this boat. Oh we were all ecstatic! Saw lots of fish marks throughout the day but couldn't get anything else but a couple more rays, three huge white fish and a calico. But that one seabass made it all worth it. Congrats to fisher and his first WSB. Hopefully I will get mine this year
