Went out with choodak and matvei on their boat with hopes of finding some bft. Launched out of shelter island, loaded up with horse dines and then it was decision time. Go to the 302 where there have been bft or make the trek to the pens? Well decided on the 302 and off we went. About a mile or so out from our destination we stop, rig up the trollers, and in they went. With in minutes ZZZZZZZZZ!!! HOOK UP!!! Our hearts are pounding, we found them! Well not exactly, after little to no fight choodak brings in a baby mako. Safe release and off we go again. Trolled around while trying to spot patties. Took awhile but finally started finding some patties but no one is home. Continue doing this through out the whole day. We found the patties, found the crashing birds working bait, but couldn't find the fish. We even found the mother of all patties, the thing had to be at least 40ft long by 10ft wide with nothing under it. Water temp never got above 67.7 I believe. Overall still a blast with the different experience. This was the first time I have ever had to be the one trying to spot the patties. Any day on the water is a good day
nice work and A+ for the effort.
Pics would be totally cool, lets see some
I didn't take any, was focusing on trying to find the fish! Haha
nice how big was the mako
Really small. Maybe 5-10lbs
Aw that mako must have made your hearts pound
U have no idea!
Sounds like a great day on the water. Last trip I had we found exactly one kelp holding out of (what seemed like) thousands of beautiful kelps. I was blown away. The one that was holding, was the furthest from home (imagine that?). Being part of the team whether it be watching the jigs and checking them often for debris and kelp, or being the guy who spots birds and kelp sure helps keep things from getting boring. Thanks for the report, good stuff.
Let me know next time you go out. My buddy Beau boat is ready to roll. Just need a buddy boat.
